Digital Diary - "Hollywood"

Tony Curtis, Schauspieler

The two films that really define Tony Curtis are Billy Wilder's "Some Like it Hot" and Richard Fleischer's "The Boston Strangler". Tony told me about Wilder's cold rejection when he tried to talk about his son's death. He talks about his fling with a young Marilyn Monroe which took place before either became famous. About Hollywood he states that you only receive recognition once you are dead or a paralyzed vegetable in a hospice.
I met Tony, surrounded by his art work in Las Vegas.

Tippi Hedren, Schauspielerin

She stars in two Hitchcock films, "The Birds" and "Marnie". Hitchcock discovered her in a commercial spot and signed her to a film contract. He made her career - and destroyed it as Tippi told me during a visit to her animal sanctuary "Shambala". She refused to sleep with him so he stopped giving her film roles.

Roger Corman, Regisseur, Produzent

We met twice in his office in Westwood, CA. He is very reluctant to talk about his own work despite his brilliant films based on Edgar Allen Poe books and the gangster film "Bloody Mama". But he really takes pride in his discoveries: Robert De Niro, Frances Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, James Cameron, Monte Hellman and many more.

Omar Sharif, Schauspieler

"Doctor Zhivago" turned him into a legend. I met Omar once in Paris, France and another time in the "Pretty Woman" hotel - The Beverly Wilshire. As he tells it, every thinks that the heart throb has had countless love affairs. Fact is, he claims, that he has had less romantic adventures than any of his classmates. His biggest scandal is his fight with a parking valet at Mastro's Steakhouse on Cañon Drive in Beverly Hills but we never mentioned that at all.

Mickey Rooney, Schauspieler

He has as many films as anecdotes. In one story about Disney he tells us how he met Walt Disney who was desperately looking for a name for his mouse. Mickey inspired Walt to named it Mickey Mouse. In his Monroe story, he and Marilyn are trying to figure out the right last name for her. The phone rings and an author named Monroe is on the line. So Marilyn Monroe was born. I met Mickey on Sunset Boulevard, in the garden of the Sunset Marquis Hotel.
We took a drive through Beverly Hills where he showed me the
villa he shared with Ava Gardner in better days.

Jane Russell, Schauspielerin

"The Outlaw" was her most scandalous film, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" her most successful.
It was not Howard Hughes who had her under contract who invented the seamless bra but Jane herself: a well=placed paper tissue created that effect. She loved to talk about Raoul Walsh and Robert Mitchum who got the better of Josef von Sternberg during an argument in Macao. Jane asserts that Marilyn - whom she protected during the filming of "Blondes" would still be alive if she had remained under the wings of the very grounded Jane.
I met Jane at a friend's house in Beverly Hills and later at her house in Santa Maria.

James Caan, Schauspieler

Famous for his role as Sonny in "The Godfather", even though he was first tapped to play the part that ultimately went to Al Pacino. During our meeting in his Hollywood home he disclosed that to prepare for Sonny, James Caan spent time in Brooklyn, NY, with real mobsters.
He learned to copy their diction and gestures.

Dreaming Los Angeles

"It's the third time that I work with Brit Newton. Here she performs as a doll at Griffith Observatory, dreaming of Los Angeles.
It's a dream of plastic, viewpoint monument, wildfire and an iconic movie star.
The motionless doll and the mirror movement of the lyrics -
that's what interested me here."

Roma Amor

Eckhart Schmidt about “RomaAmor”

“Rome is the place of my new photo project. It’s about stone, marble, iron and love. I shot it on spectacular and legendary Roman places like the Via Appia Antica, Piazza del Popolo, Castel Sant’Angelo and the Stadio Dei Marmi that Mussolini built between 1927-32. It’s a walk through the history of the Eternal City, starting off in the times BC – and it’s a photographic poem with dreaming girls on stone, marble and iron.”

L’ADDIO

Andare via
Con la pietra mutulata
Andare via
Con la terra santa
Andare via
Con il sogno eterno
Andere via
Con il sonno grande
Andare via
Con i fiori feriti
Andare via
Con l’ombra degli alberi
Andare via
Con la neve nera
Andere via
Con la strada infinita
Vestiti bianchi
Bambola della luna

UNA VITA NUOVA

Ho bisogno della forza dell’acqua
Ho bisogno del potere del leone
Ho bisogno del desiderio monumentale
Ho bisogno delle mure prottetive
Ho bisogno dei piedi di pietra
Per questa vita nuova

Per il vento del tempo
Per un momento della eternita
Per la verita del cuore
Per la notte del silenzio
Il mio primo amore
Il mio primo amore inmarmorato

German Media Review "Mulholland Drive"

We are happy to report that reviews for the current showing of "Mulholland Drive" at Stephen Hoffman Gallerie in Munich is a big success.
